Christians are Christlike?

Modern Christians worship Jesus Christ as creator of the universe and for making the ultimate sacrifice. In the bible, Jesus was crucified for the world’s sins as an act of eternal love. Now, the greatest life a Christian can live out is one that is lived by love (Ephesians 5:2). So if it is “Christianly” to live a life of love… then why do people judge others by their outward appearance and social standings? God looks at the heart (1 Samuel 16:7) and it is neither our right nor our place to judge. If walking in love is the “Christian” thing to do and we have issues doing so, there is an even greater problems deeply rooted in the hearts and minds of the people. That is all.

OSU’s Devastating Accident

Kurt Budke, the head coach, and Miranda Serna, an assistant, of OSU’s women’s basketball team were killed last Thursday evening in a plane crash just outside Perryville Arkansas. They were on a recruitment trip to encourage membership for the university’s athletic programs and on the way back from the trip the single engine “Piper” aircraft crashed 45 miles outside Little Rock. On board were Budke, Serna, the pilot Olin Branstetter, and his wife, Paula. There were no survivors.

To morn and respect the deaths of these beloved educators, Oklahoma State held a memorial service last Monday. Students, faculty, and team players made up the thousands in attendance. That goes to show you how family oriented this university is. Even if some students didn’t know the coaches or go to the basketball games… they still attended the service to show their condolences, myself included.

This Saturday the famous Bedlam game will take place at Boone Pickens Stadium and to show respect for the coaches the OSU and OU band will join together on the field during halftime to play Amazing grace in honor and remembrance of those how perished last week. In addition, the OSU and OU spirit teams will all be wearing orange ribbons to show their support. I believe that this Saturday we have a great chance of winning because we will be doing it for them. This is our year.

If it has more than 8 points, load the gun!

As fall has greatly bestowed itself upon us the awesome fall festivities have as well. In my own opinion hunting is one of the most fun things to do in the fall. Some people believe it is an awful act against wildlife. Mostly these people are tree huggers and liberals who don’t eat meat and barely count as American. However, for those of us to enjoy some good deer jerky we feel that it is unlike any other outdoorsman sport. But, like I mentioned earlier it is not for the faint at heart. Hunting is sadly not meant for some people. Heres a way to test if you have the ability to hunt or not.
Step one. Sit in a deer stand at 4 or 5 in the morning in freezing temperatures and wait, if you don’t fall asleep, freeze to death or get bored too quickly you’re off to a good start.
Step two. Keep your eyes peeled for a deer. If you don’t mind staring at the silent wilderness for awhile your good as golden.
Step three. Spot the largest buck you’ve ever seen… slowly raise your gun. At this point in time, if your heart is racing and your hands start to shake. You’ve got the huntin’ fever.
Hunting is so great because it secludes you from everyday hectic life. You are so far out in the wilderness that cell phones, wifi, and other technology won’t work. So simply going to the woods gives you a break from fast paced society, and because everyone wants the world to leave them the heck alone sometimes.

Oklahoma, home of the “Quake-a-nader”!

Oklahoma has been known as being tornado alley, but recently there have been more than just weather problems, problems with seismic proportions…There have been a toal of 23 earthquakes in the last 3 days in Oklahoma! Most of which have been too small to feel but the last and strongest so far happened last night at about 10:53pm. At a magnitude of 5.6 it really rattled some concerns with locals. Personally, my facebook wall was BOWING UP! The news feed was completely quaked out! You couldn’t scroll down without reading something about the weather. And one of the more popular questions was… “Did you feel it?!” Click here if you did… Here if you didn’t. If you clicked the second link obviously it was making fun of the people who totally freaked out. Myself along with almost everyone I’ve asked didn’t feel it either. I think it was focused more at OKC. At the time of the earthquake there was also a severe thunderstorm so I myself was out chasing it. Which maybe wasn’t a good idea but thats the thing to do in Oklahoma. You hear a storm comin’ you grab a lawn chair, sit outside, and wait. Its cheap entertainment. I remember my first tornado, I was a little kid and my family and I watched an F3 pass through our backyard. Our house and everything was fine but our neighbors roof got blown off. Wow. Talk about lucky. With Oklahoma however, it seems like we are NEVER lucky when it comes to the weather.

Home cookin’ that’ll make you left handed.

As the holidays fastly approach and the weather gets cooler we start to notice a change in people’s spirits and waist lines. School starts letting out, people get off of work sooner, and we eat till we can’t eat any more. But us Oklahomans don’t need a holiday as an excuse for having a hearty meal. We don’t eat to survive, we eat because we love it. Maybe a little too much… 30.4% of adults that live in OK are obese. ultimately the reasons for our health problems are simple: Oklahomans choose to eat too much and exercise too little. But hey, what can we say… we like food. Is this such a crime? I think not.
The expression “home cookin’ that’ll make you left-handed” ultimately means… the food you eat will mess you up… in a good way of course. For example, my mom makes THE BEST banana bread on the planet. It was my great grandmothers recipe that has been passed down, and I will get the honor of inheriting it some day. Once you sink your teeth into my moms famous banana bread, there’s no going back. Might as well just claim the whole loaf for yourself cause you’re gonna have a tough time putting it down. It’s that good. I’m serious.
Is there good food in OK might you ask? Yessir there is! Oklahoma is famous for our onion burgers, southern BBQ, and steak. Its been said that OK is the site of some of the greatest steaks you can eat, anywhere. And I believe it! Almost any nice sit down restaurant you eat at will offer you some of the best lookin’ sirloin you will feast your hungry eyes on. You won’t be disappointed. So pull up a chair, tie your napkin round’ your neck and dig in.

The Deep Side of Me

If there’s nothin’ to do in Oklahoma then I’m a monkeys uncle!

When oklahomans tell people from outta state where their from they usually get the “EW, why?” or “That sucks.” Because A.) We’re in the middle of nowhere. or B.) There’s nothing to do here! Well I’ll be a monkeys uncle if theres nothin to do! There is PLENTY to do! Anything from two steppin’, barrel racin’, to mutton bustin’ you can do almost anything here. Theres probably some of ya’ll out there who have no clue what I’m talking about…so heres alittle insight to help ya out. Two steppin’= country style of dance, barrel racin’= riding horses really fast around three seperate barrels in under 20 seconds, and mutton bustin’ = little kids riding sheep like their bulls trying to stay on as long as possible without falling off.

All these things are all well and good. People find a lot of time on their hands and do other things with it also. For example… fishing, arm wrestling, shooting guns at random things, happy drives to walmart, going to church, widdle wooden sculptures… basically anything! When I’m at home on the weekends and all my friends are out of town I usually just fill my time with being outside. I love the outdoors and despite what some people may say, Oklahoma does have some beautiful scenery. I also like to spend time with my dog Marley. Shes a lab retriver and I’am training her to fetch water foul to be a huntin’ dog just in time for duck season! There’s anything and everything to be done here so if you’re ever bored in Oklahoma, you shouldn’t be.

How to Survive College: The Balancing Act of School and A Social Life

Here I get the inside scoop on what its like to study more than 30-100 hours a week! I sit down with 4 students with very ambitious majors and talk to them about how they balance school, work, clubs, studying and their social lives and still have enough time for themselves AND good grades. Its a tough battle but they never let it get the best of them. -Shanna Wolford
